Program Description

Your 8-day itinerary is perfectly positioned to explore the Southern Carpathians, home to Europe’s largest populations of brown bears and elusive lynx. To maximize your chances of success, we pair early morning and evening field trips in the company of a wildlife researcher, evening hides in Transylvania with dedicated beaver safaris

Fly into Brasov Airport (GHV) or Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport (OTP), the primary international hub in Romania.

You can arrange your own transfer or we can arrange a private transfer to the mountain town of Zarnesti. Check in into a local guesthouse at the foot of Piatra Craiului National Park, featuring rooms with private toilets and showers.

These wildlife-focused days center around ethically tracking elusive predators like lynx and brown bears. Because these animals are most active around dawn and dusk, your expert wildlife researcher will lead pre-sunrise and afternoon excursions.

Wildlife Excursions
  • Morning & Evening Tracking: A local researcher will drive you to a valley with fresh animal activity. Expect a 30 to 60-minute hike (medium-to-hard difficulty depending on your fitness and the exact terrain) to a hidden vantage point.
  • Observation: You will sit quietly in the wild for a couple of hours. Binoculars and spotting scopes are highly recommended, as distance and lighting make standard photography challenging.
  • Important Guidelines: Sightings cannot be guaranteed. To maximize your chances, wear comfortable, sturdy walking boots, dress in neutral/quiet clothing, and absolutely avoid all fragrances (perfumes, heavily scented creams, etc.).
Day-Time Activities & Sightseeing
After returning to your guesthouse for a late breakfast, you have the rest of the day to relax or explore. Options include:
  • Nature Activities: Hiking, wildlife tracking, cycling, horseback riding, or visiting a traditional shepherd's camp.
  • Local Castles & Landmarks:
      • Bran Castle: Explore Transylvania's iconic "Dracula's Castle", located about an hour from Zarnesti.
      • Peles Castle: Visit the spectacular former summer residence of Romanian royalty in Sinaia.
      • Prejmer Fortified Church: Wander through this UNESCO World Heritage site.

  • Relaxation: Unwind in the guesthouse garden with a glass of local plum brandy, bilberry liquor, or a "bear beer".
Trail Option 1: Zarnesti Gorge to Magura Village
After a late breakfast, we drive to the entrance of the impressive limestone canyon of Zarnesti Gorge. We take an easy walk followed by a gentle climb through a forest teeming with wildlife up to the traditional mountain village of M?gura, nestled in Piatra Craiului National Park. The canyon—with its 40 – 80m high walls—provides an opportunity to spot rare birds like wallcreepers and Alpine swifts. You can also admire the dramatic Jurassic geological formations, which served as filming locations for movies such as Cold Mountain. During our walk, we may see signs of bears, wild boars, foxes, and pine martens. With good binoculars, you might even catch sight of chamois roaming the steep slopes.
    • Altitude difference: 400m
    • Hiking difficulty: Easy, followed by a gentle climb (medium)

Trail Option 2: Curmatura Chalet Challenge (For Active Guests)
For the more active guest, we can replace the M?gura trail with a more challenging hike into Piatra Craiului National Park. The route climbs to Cabana Curmatura at 1470m altitude—or even higher toward the alpine ridge. After enjoying the mountain air and stunning views, the descent takes you down through the dramatic landscapes of the Zarnesti Gorge to complete the loop.
  • Altitude difference: Up to 750m climb depending on the chosen endpoint
  • Hiking difficulty: Medium to hard 
Coltii Chiliei (1125 m) – Barsa Valley (Piatra Craiului mountain), wildlife watching in the evening
Morning: Hike to the Historic Cave Shrine
After breakfast, leave Zarnesti on foot toward the Piatra Craiului Mountains. The trail ascends through vibrant mountain meadows, which are blanketed with wild alpine flowers during spring and summer.
Your destination is Coltii Chiliei (1,125 m), a historic cave shrine dating back to the 14th century. Here, your guide will share stories about medieval monastic life, ancient agricultural traditions, and how modern technology is reshaping local rural communities.
    • Altitude Gain: +300 meters
    • Difficulty: Medium (moderate steady incline)

Late Afternoon & Evening: Wildlife Tracking Choice
Rest your legs with a short drive into the Bârsa Valley. You have two distinct options for the evening, depending on your preferred style of wildlife viewing:
  • Option A: Managed Wildlife Hide (Higher Sightings Probability)
      • The Experience: Watch Carpathian brown bears from a secure, specialized forest cabin.
      • The History: These sites originally fed bears to keep them deep in the woods and minimize human-wildlife conflict.
      • The Benefit: Close-up photography opportunities and a very high success rate.

  • Option B: Pure Wild Tracking (Authentic Wilderness Experience)
    • The Experience: Skip the cabin and head out with the wildlife expert for another activity similar to days 2&5.
    • The Benefit: An authentic, unpredictable adventure focusing on spotting animals naturally.

The Narcissus Forest (Poiana Vadului), wildlife watching in the evening

After breakfast, we drive approximately 1 hour to one of the region’s prime protected wetlands. This 400-hectare oak forest and marshland is an ideal habitat for diverse birds, butterflies, and mammals like brown bears and wild boars. Along with spotting mammal tracks, you can expect to see species like the Lesser Spotted Eagle, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Hoopoe, Great Grey Shrike, Woodlark, and Wood Warbler.
    • Difficulty: Easy (Flat terrain, 0m elevation gain)

In the evening, we head to a second observation hide for a closer look at local wildlife in a natural, quiet setting. If you prefer pure wildlife watching over sitting in a blind, you can opt to do a similar activity to days 2&5 instead.
Morning: Brasov Highlights
Enjoy an extended rest this morning before breakfast. At a mutually-agreed time we depart for Brasov (approx. 40-minute drive). Upon arrival, your guide will provide a brief introductory tour of the historic medieval center. After a curated lunch at a traditional local restaurant, you will have free time for shopping and independent exploration.
Afternoon: Beaver Wildlife Excursion
At the time set by our wildlife specialist you will drive to an active beaver monitoring area, where you will learn about local reintroduction initiatives. The day concludes with an easy, low-difficulty walk to observe the beavers during their evening feeding time.
Transfer back to the airport.

Cost: 1600 Euro per person

This cost is calculated for a group of minimum 2 persons, with accommodation in Zarnesti. Available accommodation also in Brasov medieval town (different cost!)
